ER vs. Urgent Care – Where Should You Really Go?

Not sure if you should go to Urgent Care vs ER for injuries you’ve sustained? Did a sudden illness or injury just happen and you need to be seen by a medical provider? When such situations occur, sometimes we’re not sure where to go or what to do, especially if our regular doctor’s office is closed or unavailable for immediate assistance.

While the answer isn’t all that simple, knowing the difference between emergency care and urgent care could potentially save your life in the event of a medical emergency.

<h2> Don’t Panic! Especially Not at the Disco

Nobody plans to have a medical emergency, so it’s important to know where to go in case one does occur. Emergency Room (ER) facilities, Urgent Care clinics, and Primary Care facilities are all different types of medical establishments that provide unique levels of medical care. It’s important to understand what’s best for the situation: do you need Urgent Care vs. an ER for your injuries?

For minor injuries and illnesses, urgent or primary care can be a better choice than the ER. For more severe injuries or illnesses that require immediate care, Urgent Care is usually the way to go. But if you’re experiencing a life-threatening emergency, the ER is your best option.

Recognizing the difference between “emergency” and “urgent” can be confusing because both terms imply there’s a medical need that must be addressed quickly. However, there’s a distinct difference between the two terms, just like between the two facilities.

As a rule of thumb, if your sudden illness or injury is something you’d be comfortable addressing with your primary care provider, Urgent Care is usually the more appropriate setting because they fill the gap between PCP and ER. But remember to trust your gut – if your instincts are telling you that it’s serious, DO NOT HESITATE – go to the nearest Emergency Room.

This Is Difficult to Follow. What’s the Difference Between ER and Urgent Care?

Let’s discuss the difference between ER and Urgent Care.

Emergency Room:

Hospital emergency departments provide care at any time of day or night. They are fully equipped and staffed for even the most complex or critical needs, from life-threatening to traumatic injuries.

Emergency services are in-person-only services.

Urgent Care:

Urgent Care centers or walk-in clinics provide care for non-emergency illness or injury. They are equipped to handle a variety of medical problems that need to be treated right away but are not considered emergencies (like life-threatening or traumatic injuries are).

Urgent Care sometimes offers telehealth services for those who prefer to stay within the comfort of their home. Telehealth includes live videoconferencing with medical providers or telephone-only consultations.

Reasons to Go to the ER

Emergency rooms are designed to provide emergency care for serious and life-threatening conditions, as they are equipped to handle serious injuries and other critical medical conditions. They are open 24/7.

Symptoms that are best evaluated in an Emergency Room include, but are not limited to:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Chest pain
  • Severe chest pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Slurred speech
  • Broken bones and dislocated joints
  • Seizures
  • Lacerations that may require stitches
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Large open wounds
  • Severe head injury
  • Loss of limb
  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Concussion
  • weakness/numbness on one side

Remember, Emergency Rooms are meant for emergency situations. This means life- and limb-threatening events. As expensive as ER visits are, make sure you need to go before you do.

Reasons to Go to Urgent Care

Urgent care clinics treat non-emergency medical problems that can develop suddenly or unexpectedly and require immediate attention. They fill the gap between primary care physicians and hospital emergency rooms. They are usually open for long hours, and some are even available overnight.

Symptoms that are best evaluated in an Urgent Care clinic include, but are not limited to:

  • Minor injuries
  • Minor burns
  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Sore throat or strep throat
  • Flu symptoms or fever
  • Minor sprains or strains
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Skin rashes
  • Physicals
  • Medical testing
  • Immunizations

Remember, Urgent Care is meant for non-emergency situations. This means events that are important and require immediate attention, but do NOT merit an ER visit.

If you aren’t sure whether to go to the ER or Urgent Care, you can always err on the side of caution and visit the Emergency Room just in case.
